Periodontitis

It is easy to focus on your teeth and overlook the gums around them. If you notice bleeding when you brush or clean between your teeth, it is worth arranging a dental check. Gum problems do not always cause pain, so discomfort is not the only sign to watch for.

Gingivitis and periodontitis

Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that builds up on teeth. When it collects around the gumline, it can irritate the gums and cause inflammation called gingivitis. Gums may look red or swollen and bleed easily. This early stage can often be reversed with effective daily cleaning and professional care.

Periodontitis affects the tissues and bone that support the teeth. It can lead to spaces, or pockets, forming between the teeth and gums, loss of support and eventually loose teeth. It needs professional treatment and ongoing maintenance. Your dentist can assess which condition is present and how advanced it is.

Changes worth checking

  • Bleeding when brushing or cleaning between teeth.
  • Red, swollen or tender gums.
  • Persistent bad breath or an unpleasant taste.
  • Gums drawing back so teeth look longer.
  • Teeth becoming loose or a change in how your teeth meet.

Seek prompt dental advice if you have very painful, swollen gums or a newly loose adult tooth. Severe swelling or difficulty swallowing or breathing requires immediate medical help.

Why some people need closer monitoring

Daily cleaning matters, but it is not the whole picture. Smoking and diabetes can increase the risk of gum problems, and other health factors can affect the care you need. Tell your dentist about your medical history and medicines.

It helps to bring a list of your medicines and mention changes in your health since your last visit. You do not need to work out whether each detail is connected to your gums; your dentist can decide what is relevant. A useful plan should take account of your wider health as well as what the examination shows.

How treatment can help

Your dentist will examine your gums, measure the spaces around your teeth and may recommend X-rays. Care can include personalised cleaning advice and professional removal of plaque and hardened deposits. Some people need deeper cleaning below the gumline or assessment by a gum specialist.

At home, brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth using a method your dental team recommends. Follow-up visits are tailored to your needs so the response to treatment can be checked.
