Do you suffer from tooth pain?

Whether it is short-lived, hot or cold or mild to aching, it is good to see your Dentist sooner than later.

Types of Pain

Sharp pain

A sharp shooting pain, can be experienced with either eating or drinking hot or cold things, biting hard on the tooth or even brushing the tooth.

Things causing this short lived pain can include:

  • Cavity

  • Cracked tooth

  • Open tooth neck

Any one of these can cause the dentine layer and the pulp layer inside your tooth exposed. Exposed dentine or pulp can be caused from damage to enamel(the tooths outer protective layer).

Dull throbbing pain

This type of pain can last for days on end. It can be pin pointed to one area in the mouth or jaw and can be an indication of a dental infection or abscess.

Treatment

Different tooth aches or pains will be treated differently by your dentist. A sharp pain to cold or heat could be from a crack or broken tooth, leaving the dentine exposed. This is easily fixed or repaired with a filling or a crown.

A sharp pain whilst brushing your teeth and gums could be from your gum that has receded or been brush away. This can easily be treated with a sealant or varnish.

A dull lingering pain on the other hand, indicates something more serious. Your dentist will then investigate to find the cause. This could mean that your tooth might require a root canal treatment or even an extraction.

Conclusion

Tooth ache can be experienced in many different ways. Visiting the dentist regularly every 6 months can help identify small problems and fix them, before they become to big or serious.
